Hygiene Policy & Mat Etiquette
At Velocity Grappling, we roll with purpose, learn through focus, and respect each other as teammates.
That respect starts with hygiene and etiquette, keeping our mats clean, our training partners safe, and our community healthy.
Personal Hygiene
-
Shower before class when possible, especially after work or exercise.
-
Always wear freshly washed gear.
-
Trim and file fingernails and toenails short to avoid scratches.
-
Brush teeth or use mouthwash before training.
-
Keep hair tied back if it is long.
-
Cover cuts, scrapes, or skin irritations with a clean bandage.
-
If you’re sick, have a fever, flu, staph, or any contagious condition, stay home until you’re fully recovered.
Training Gear
-
Wash your Gi, rash guard, spats, shorts, and belt after every class.
-
Rash guards are strongly encouraged under the Gi to prevent skin-to-skin contact.
-
Do not re-wear sweaty or unwashed gear.
-
Store mouthguards in a ventilated case, never loose in your bag or on shared surfaces.
-
Keep all gear clean, odor-free, and in good condition

Mat Rules
-
No street shoes on the mats.
-
Wear flip-flops, slides, or wrestling shoes (if approved) when off the mats.
-
Never go barefoot into restrooms or outside areas.
-
No food or drinks on the mats.
-
If you bleed or your bandage comes off, stop training, clean the area, and re-cover before returning.
Safety & Training Etiquette
-
Respect the tap: tap early, tap clearly, and release immediately.
-
Train with control, not ego, injuries come from force, not technique.
-
Adjust your intensity to match your partner’s size and skill level.
-
Remove all jewelry and piercings before class to avoid injuries.
-
Report any injuries or unsafe behavior to an instructor immediately.

Community Standards
-
Respect your instructors, teammates, and the academy space.
-
Keep your belongings neat and pick up after yourself.
-
Dispose of tape, bandages, and trash properly.
-
Support beginners, ask questions, and help create a positive atmosphere.
-
Leave pride at the door, we’re here to grow together.
