Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Getting Started:

Kids & Parents (VelociGrapplers Program):

Q: Is Jiu-Jitsu safe for kids this young?
A: Yes. Safety is our top priority. Classes are supervised closely, drills are age-appropriate, and we teach a “tap early, train safe” culture from day one.

Q: What if my child is shy or nervous?
A: Totally normal! Our coaches pair shy kids with patient partners, start them slow, and build confidence step by step. Most kids settle in after just a few classes.

Q: Will my child roll/spar right away?
A: Yes — but it’s different from adult sparring. Kids spar in a controlled, age-appropriate way that looks more like supervised games and position practice. It’s safe, fun, and reinforces skills they just learned.

Q: Will this make my child more aggressive?
A: Quite the opposite. Kids learn discipline, respect, and self-control. They’re taught when to use their skills — and when not to.

Q: Can parents watch class?
A: Yes! We have a viewing area where you can watch your child progress while giving them space to grow.

Q: Do you offer belt promotions for kids?
A: Yes. Kids earn stripes and belts based on focus, effort, and skill — not just time spent. Promotions celebrate progress and positive attitude.

Teens & Adults Program:

Q: I’ve never trained before. Can I still join?
A: Absolutely. Most of our members started as complete beginners. Classes are structured step by step, and you’ll never be thrown into anything you’re not ready for.

Q: Am I too old/out of shape to start Jiu-Jitsu?
A: Not at all. Jiu-Jitsu is for every body type and fitness level. You’ll build strength, flexibility, and endurance gradually at your own pace.

Q: Will I have to roll/spar right away?
A: Yes, the only way to learn is to practice — but in a controlled way. From your first class, you’ll practice drills and positions with a partner under coach supervision. Think of it as applying what you learned, not an uncontrolled fight.

Q: For Women: Will I only be training with men?
A: Classes are mixed, but we make sure everyone has safe, respectful training partners. Coaches also pair beginners thoughtfully, so you feel comfortable from day one.

Q: Is Jiu-Jitsu safe for women?
A: Yes. Jiu-Jitsu is designed for smaller people to defend against larger opponents. It’s one of the most practical martial arts for women because it focuses on leverage and technique over size and strength.

Q: Can Jiu-Jitsu help with self-defense?
A: Absolutely. Many of the techniques you’ll learn are directly applicable to real-life situations. Plus, you’ll build confidence in handling pressure and staying calm.

What to Wear:

Q: What is a gi?
A: A gi (pronounced “gee”) is the traditional training uniform used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It looks like a heavy-duty jacket and pants with a belt to show rank. Training in the gi teaches grips, control, and techniques that build a strong foundation.

Q: What is No-Gi?
A: No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is training without the traditional gi uniform. Instead, students wear athletic clothes such as a rash guard (or fitted workout shirt) and shorts or leggings. No-Gi focuses on grips, movement, and control without using a jacket or pants to hold onto, which makes it faster-paced and very practical for self-defense.

Q: What should my child wear for their first class?
A: Comfortable athletic clothes work great — a fitted T-shirt or rash guard with shorts or leggings (no zippers or pockets). Kids can start in No-Gi until they’re ready to get a gi.

Q: What should adults/teens wear to start?
A: For No-Gi classes, wear a rash guard or fitted workout top with athletic shorts or joggers (no pockets or zippers). Once you’re ready, we’ll guide you in choosing a gi.

Q: What about women?
A: Yoga pants/leggings or fitted athletic shorts with a rash guard or workout top are perfect. For Gi classes, we’ll help you find the right fit when you’re ready.

Q: Do I need to buy a gi right away?
A: No. You can start training in No-Gi gear (rash guard and shorts/leggings). Many students wait a few weeks before purchasing their first gi.

Q: What about shoes and socks?
A: For hygiene and safety:

  • No shoes on the mats at any time.

  • Socks are usually not worn during training (they slip).

  • Students must wear shoes or sandals when leaving the mat — especially in bathrooms or hallways.

Hygiene & Safety (See our Hygiene & Mat Policy):

Q: How often are mats cleaned?
A: Mats are sanitized daily, with additional wipe-downs as needed between classes.

Q: Are there hygiene rules for students?
A: Yes. Students must keep nails trimmed, wear clean gear, and stay off the mats if sick or injured. Shoes are never allowed on the mats.

Q: What if I get injured?
A: Safety comes first. If you need to step out, coaches will help you immediately. We also offer membership freeze options if you need recovery time.

Q: How does the December Free Month work?
A: Train free in December. If you love it, you can sign up and start paying in January. You can cancel anytime.

Private Lessons:

Q: Do I need to be a member to take private lessons?
A: No. While most students combine privates with group classes, non-members are welcome to schedule private training.

Q: Can I split a private lesson with a friend or family member?
A: Yes. Semi-privates (2–3 students) are available. Pricing may vary depending on group size — ask us for details.

Q: How long is each session?
A: Private lessons are one hour. Extended sessions can be arranged if needed.

Q: What should I bring?
A: For No-Gi training, wear a rash guard or fitted workout shirt with athletic shorts/leggings (no pockets or zippers). For Gi training, bring your Gi and belt. Don’t forget water and flip-flops for off the mats.

Q: How do I schedule a private lesson?
A: You can email us, talk to a coach after class, stop by the front desk, or call/text us directly. We’ll find a time that fits your schedule.

Q: Can kids do private lessons?
A: Absolutely. Privates are a great way to help kids build confidence, sharpen discipline, and reinforce what they learn in group classes.
